I have a weak line in my pregnancy test: Am I pregnant? Reviewed by on February 27, 2019 Written by Jennifer Walker. You suspect you're pregnant and have taken a pregnancy test at home, but suddenly your anticipation becomes confused when you see a very weak line in the test. What does it mean? Find out why your test line can be weak and whether you are pregnant or not. If you see a positive line, you are pregnant A pregnancy test checks the presence of a hormone known as hCG (Human Coral Choralin Gonadotrophin). This is often called "pregnancy hormone" because it is usually only present in your body when you are pregnant. As your pregnancy progresses, hCG levels will go up, facilitating the detection of tests. Some pregnancy tests, such as Clearblue Digital, will give you a clear answer in words like "Pregnancy" or "No Pregnancy," however, many tests will show two lines if you are pregnant. If the test has worked – and you are using a visual test – you will always see the 'control line'– but if you are pregnant, another line will also develop. Sometimes it's easy to say if the pregnancy test is positive or not, but sometimes this other line can be very weak. If you see a , even if it is weak, the simple answer is: Yes, you are almost sure you are pregnant. What causes weak positive lines in a pregnancy test? The strength of the positive test line depends on how much hCG is in your urine. If the line is weak, it usually means that the hCG level is low. One reason that hCG levels can be low could be because it is still very early in your pregnancy. Some very sensitive pregnancy test kits can detect pregnancy as early as 6 days before your lost period (5 days before you wait for your period), however hCG levels so early are so low that you can expect any line to be weak. As your pregnancy progresses, hCG levels will rise, so if you decide to try again, you will likely see a much stronger positive line. You can see how your hCG levels increase in your urine during early pregnancy in the chart below. Pregnancy Hormone Mounting (hCG) in Early PregnancyAdapted from: Gnoth C. and Johnson S. Strips of Hope: Precision of Home Pregnancy Tests and New Developments. GeburtshilfeFrauenheilkd 2014;74(7):661-669. Another reason you can only see a weak positive is because you have drunk too much fluid. Drinking a lot of water or another drink before taking a pregnancy test can help produce a urine sample faster, but will dilute the concentration of any hCG. Drinking a lot of fluid before testing can leave you with a weak positive line, or if you're testing early, even a negative result. It may be easy to think that a weak line is a false positive, but it is very, very rare to get a false positive result. You can read more about . How is a weak line? Each pregnancy test is different, with some brands using a red dye and others, such as Clearblue, a blue dye. For a red dye test, a weak line will look light pink, while a blue dye test will produce a light blue line See the images below to get an idea of what a weak line may look like. How can I avoid having weak lines in my pregnancy test? You can avoid the uncertainty of weak lines if you: If you see weak lines and are not yet sure if you are pregnant or not, you might want to try again in a few days of time when your hCG levels can be higher. If you are not sure yet, consult your doctor. What does my positive result mean? It is normal to have questions when a test becomes positive and we are here to help you understand what your result means. What does my negative result mean?
